Basic Information
John Mills Elementary School educates students in pre-kindergarten (PK) through 5th grade. We are the Trojans, and our school colors are maroon and gold.
All of our students must be residents of Elmwood Park, Ill., a Near West suburb of Chicago with a population of about 25,000.
As part of Elmwood Park Community Unit School District 401, we are the District's only school that teaches PK students, and we share responsibility with Elmwood Elementary for educating our community's K-5 children.
Our Mission
John Mills' guiding philosophy and values are summed up in this mission statement:
Our mission at John Mills Elementary School, in partnership with the home and community, is to promote self-esteem, academic success, social responsibility and lifelong learning by providing for all students and staff a caring and challenging educational environment.
Our Academics and Support Services
We provide instruction in the core academic subjects of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. Our students also receive instruction in "specials" — i.e., art, enrichment, music, physical education and technology.
Our accelerated learning and academic support programs include opportunities for advanced learners, instruction for English learners, assistance for students with reading difficulties, services for special education students and accommodations for Section 504 students.
Our Clubs and Student Activities
John Mills students have numerous opportunities to develop their extracurricular interests, including a vibrant musical program.
Our student organizations and activities include Art Club, Intramurals, Sign Language Club, STEM Club, Student Council, TAP (Technology Apprentice Program), Trojan Tribune, Yearbook and Young Rembrandts.
